Learn the basics of computing.

Communication through email and online is becoming the norm. This course will take you from turning on the computer through to email tips and tricks, internet (with a focus on sites farmers can use) and Word software.

*Please note: This course comprises of either two half day sessions of 4 hours, or four evening sessions of 2 hours.

Session 1 – Get information from the Internet

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Turn on your computer and navigate around the main screen using your mouse and keyboard
  • Describe the purpose of, and identify which Operating System you are running
  • Describe the purpose of, and identify the Web Brower(s) on your computer
  • Describe the purpose of a search engine and perform search tasks and find information on the internet using key words
  • Navigate websites and use bookmarks
  • Explain the importance of internet safety.


Session 2 – Communicate

By the end of session two you will be able to:

  • Choose and enter ‘strong’ passwords
  • Identify the properties of an email address
  • Differentiate between read and unread emails, and navigate and understand the various folders in your email account
  • Reorder content in your Inbox and reply, forward and compose an email.


Session 3 – Use Microsoft Word to create and save your own document

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Find and open Microsoft Word and perform the following tasks
  • Move around the document
  • Enter text and numbers
  • Copy and paste text within the document
  • Rename and save the document file to a new folder in a specific location
  • Minimise, restore and close the programme
  • Create a shortcut to the saved document on the desktop.


Session 4 – Put it all together

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recall your learnings from the previous sessions
  • Write and email, attach a document and sent it
  • Identify areas for further learning.
