Our Amenity Apprenticeship
Duration: 34 months
Level: 3 and 4
This programme is for those who have general horticulture experience, want a career in horticulture, love being outdoors, and are passionate about garden maintenance and plants.
Amenity horticulture is about growing, establishing and managing gardens and public spaces to create vibrant spaces we can all enjoy.
You’ll learn to:
- Work effectively as part of a team, carry out routine maintenance of parks, open spaces, plants, and gardens, and operate machinery for amenity horticulture. You’ll develop an understanding of plant growth cycles, soil science, plant identification, and plant classification, as well as how plants adapt to different environments.
- The programme covers identifying, reporting, and controlling weeds, pests, and diseases; pruning and training amenity trees and shrubs; and managing amenity turf. You’ll also learn to supervise and instruct others using effective communication skills, apply environmentally sustainable practices and legislation, plan and monitor seasonal management programmes, and manage a defined amenity area.

Level: 2
This programme sets learners up with the foundational knowledge and skills required to be safe and confidently undertake their role.
This is an ideal qualification for new team members with a natural alignment to induction programmes.
For learners, this is a great first step before entering into an apprenticeship.
You’ll learn to:
- Carry out practical tasks associated with an entry level role in amenity.
- Use safe work practices in an amenity role.
Duration: 12 months
Level: 3
For those who love being outdoors and are passionate about garden maintenance and plants. Amenity horticulture is about growing, establishing and managing gardens and public spaces to create vibrant spaces we can all enjoy.
Learners will explore the detail and science on the care of parks and open spaces, and understand growing cycles and the impact of weeds, pests and disease. Learners will get hands-on experience maintaining plants and learning to safely operate machinery.
You’ll learn to:
- Work effectively as part of a team, follow workplace health and safety practices, and carry out routine maintenance of parks, open spaces, plants, and gardens. You’ll operate amenity machinery, understand plant growth cycles and basic soil science, identify amenity plants, and recognise, report, and control weeds, pests, and diseases.
Duration: 22 months
Level: 4
This programme is for learners who would like to extend their technical knowledge, take on more responsibility and have the potential to move into a role supervising staff.
You’ll learn to:
Supervise and provide instruction to team members using a range of effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to a horticulture sector.
Implement and monitor a seasonal management plan, manage a defined amenity area and undertake tasks such as pruning and training, managing agrichemicals and identifying amenity tree health problems.
Apply knowledge to achieve functional and aesthetic effects of plants, gardens, and open spaces including plant classification, anatomy, morphology, soil management, turf management, environmental effects and more.
Additional optional topics are also available, such as:
- Routine maintenance scheduling for vehicles, plant, machinery and equipment.
- Describe, establish and maintain plant collections.
- Examine, assess, revegetate indigenous plant communities.
