International Literacy Day 8 September 2024

E kore e mutunga tēnei mea ko te ako – Learning is never-ending.

By Mel Weston, Primary ITO Learning Support Manager

It’s International Literacy Day this Sunday 8 September and while the primary sector does have more people with literacy difficulties than other industries, we also have tools and people to help.

New Zealand’s literacy levels are generally high compared to many countries. But where they are lower, the factors include socio-economic disparities and educational system challenges

At Primary ITO, we know that where people do have lower literacy and numeracy levels, it’s difficult for them to succeed with their training – and career – aspirations.

Fortunately, there’s a lot we can do to support them. Improving adult literacy in New Zealand – and among primary sector learners, needs a multi-pronged approach addressing both systemic and individual needs.

Firstly, we should celebrate that they are engaging in adult learning.

Secondly, we talk to them about any learning challenges they face.

  • Do they have good support at home? Or in the workplace?
  • Do they need a reader writer?
  • What assistance would work for them?

We can also point them to ways they can learn in their own time and ways – if that’s what they prefer.

It can also be really useful for people to know they’re not alone. About 20 percent of Primary ITO learners have low or no prior education qualifications, which means a literacy and numeracy assessment is needed.

Despite that, some people will fly through the assessment but for others, it’s the first step towards addressing their challenges and getting their first ever qualification. And that can be truly life-changing.
