New Effluent and Waste Management Micro-credential available now

Effluent and waste. They’re not the most glamourous of topics but they are super-important on the farm.

A new Primary ITO micro-credential focuses on equipping farmers with the knowledge to deal with effluent and waste effectively, while meeting compliance requirements and looking after the health and safety of people on farm.

The Effluent and Waste Management Level 4 Micro-credential is for farm managers, 2IC roles, or those with a few years’ experience, who are responsible for overseeing effluent and waste management on-farm. It will equip farmers with the knowledge and confidence to develop an Effluent Management Plan that complies with local bylaws, in the face of increasing rules and regulations in this area.

Effluent and waste. They’re not the most glamourous of topics but they are super-important on the farm.

The bite-sized piece of learning covers managing and minimising risks around dealing with effluent, including health and safety practices. Other topics include animal health, water and air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and how to manage effluent to minimise the carbon footprint. The qualification takes six months to complete and includes three off-job workshops.

Primary ITO Sector Manager for Dairy, Marianne Awburn, says the micro-credential aims to help farmers deal confidently with effluent and all manner of waste disposal, from drums and silo covers to animal carcasses, oils, and chemicals.

“Compliance is a big part of farming these days. There’s a real focus with this micro-credential on making sure people know how to find current legislation, local bylaws, and information on the correct disposal procedures for their area.

“It goes into real depth on topics including high-risk soils, and the nutrient value of effluent and how it can be reused on farm as a valuable resource. It also covers how to look after the people who are working with the effluent systems from a health and safety point of view.

“It’s a really comprehensive piece of learning, with a focus on people and the environment.”

The off-job interactive workshops will be delivered by tutors who have been up-skilled by industry experts. This will also be an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning and discussion, and potentially a field trip to help put learning into practice.
