4 October 2024

In 2024, the New Zealand Certificate in Pork Production (Level 3) has been refreshed to meet the evolving needs of the pork farming industry, with strong input from NZ Pork and review by the NZ Pork Farmer Reference Group.

This revamped programme is designed to provide your staff with critical skills while incorporating new, valuable elements to enhance their learning experience and strengthen farm productivity.

“It’s great to have a refreshed course with more opportunities for engagement by pork industry learners. Employers in the sector have been supporters of these qualifications for a long time and highly value training opportunities for their staff.” – Dr Kirsty Chidgey, NZ Pork Animal welfare scientist and NZ Certificate in Pork Production (Level 3) Tutor and Assessor.

What's New in 2024?

This version of the programme introduces increased face-to-face workshops featuring guest speakers, including vets, technical experts, and environmental specialists from NZ Pork. These workshops allow trainees to deepen their understanding of modern pig farming practices and interact directly with industry leaders.

  • Four off-farm workshop days: In addition to learning from leading pig production tutors, workshops give trainees a unique opportunity to network with peers and learn from other farms, offering new perspectives and innovative ideas. For many, connecting with their peers helps counter the isolation that often comes with farming.
  • Zoom discussion groups: To ensure ongoing support, trainees can join Zoom sessions where they’ll ask questions and engage in live discussions with their tutor, peers and guest speakers. This additional layer of engagement ensures that everyone has the tools they need to succeed in completing the qualification.

Industry Approval and Expert Endorsement

This refreshed programme was proudly approved by the NZ Pork Farmer Reference Group, an advisory body that meets monthly to ensure the needs of New Zealand pig farmers are met. Their input ensures that the programme is relevant and directly aligned with the demands of today’s farming landscape.

Focus on Animal Welfare

As the animal welfare code for pigs evolves, it is critical to ensure the next generation of farmers is trained to uphold the highest standards. This programme emphasizes best practice in animal husbandry, equipping your team with the knowledge needed to contribute to New Zealand’s reputation for high animal welfare standards. Given the importance of welfare in maintaining the value and reputation of New Zealand pork, this training is an investment in the future of your farm.
