Summary
The New Zealand Certificate in Equine Racing has three strands available:
- as a raceday strapper learners will be able to prepare and tend to horses in the stable, at trials and on raceday
- as a racing track rider learners will develop the skills to ride a racehorse in exercise on a racecourse and at a training track
- as a harness racing stable assistant learners will be able to gear up and drive standardbred horses in trackwork, and attend to horses after trackwork.
Learning outcomes
Topics include:
- attend to the routine day-to-day requirements of horses in training
- apply skills and knowledge in the routine identification, reporting and treatment of problems of horses in training, and respond appropriately to emergencies involving horses
- communicate effectively with team members and clients.
Thoroughbred Raceday Strapper strand
- apply correct procedures in the routine preparation of horses and gear for trials and racing, and attend to horses requirements before and after trials and racing.
Thoroughbred Racing Track Rider strand
- apply skills and correct procedures when riding thoroughbred racehorses, as instructed, in pacework and fastwork on public training tracks, and attend to horses routine requirements before and after trackwork
- apply skills and correct procedures when riding thoroughbred racehorses for barrier practice and jump outs.
Harness Racing Stable Assistant strand
- apply correct procedures in the routine preparation of standardbred horses, gear up and drive standardbred horses in trackwork, and attend to horses after trackwork.
