Summary

Learners will be able to operate as a stockperson in a pork production unit and can progress to roles such as a section manager, with responsibility for one section within a pork production unit, with varying responsibilities depending on farm structure.

Learners could also progress to roles such as husbandry specialists, to improve production in several sections, or across the pork production unit.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this programme, learners will be able to: 

  • Maintain pork production unit hygiene
  • Care for newly weaned pigs
  • Care for grower pigs
  • Prepare pigs for transport
  • Understand feeds, nutrient requirements and pig feeding
  • Prepare pig feed by milling and mixing or prepare and operate a feeding system for pigs
  • Understand pig health, health problems, behaviour, biosecurity, welfare and productivity
  • Identify signs of health and ill health in pigs, and perform preventative health procedures
  • Understand pig anatomy, physiology and reproductive processes
  • Understand weaning, grower and weaner pig housing, husbandry and carcass classification and perform calculations
  • Perform on-farm husbandry procedures on sows and boars
  • Carry out husbandry procedures, reproductive procedures, and selection of breeding stock on a pig farm
  • Care for the sow and litter from birth to weaning
  • Prepare sows to farrow
  • Understand pig reproduction
  • Understand farrowing and post-farrowing care of the sow and litter
  • Understand breeding herd turnover
  • Understand pork production unit effluent management and describe environmental implications.
